Literacy was once defined as the ability to read and write. Today, we understand that there are many different kinds of literacies. There are people who read and write without any difficulty, but do not know how to stay out of debt, balance their checkbooks, and live within their means (financial literacy). Others may not know how to work well with others or "get the job done" easily (workplace literacy) or understand the "local" lifestyle and customs (community literacy). These are just a few examples.
